The PTP Academy

A THEATRICAL LABORATORY FOR YOUNG ARTISTS

The PTP Academy is a rigorous and supportive arts & social justice training program dedicated to the holistic development of immigrant youth from grades K-12. The program aims to develop the next generation of collaborative, creative and social minded civic artists while connecting participants to community resources and pathways to opportunity.

After school, in the evening, on weekends, and in summer camps, the People's Theatre Project Studio located at 5030 Broadway is a theatrical laboratory where young artists in grades K-12 expand their understanding of social justice and refine their personal points of view. The PTP Academy picks up where the school partnerships leave off, allowing participants to go deeper into both the creative work and civic engagement while building pathways to academic and career success. Participation is free of charge.

In the early program sessions, participants engage in theatre games and activities to build an ensemble, and learn performance skills to be able to use their bodies and voices dynamically. The heart of the program are the art making sessions in which the actors explore and collaboratively practice theatre making techniques such as movement, improvisation, song, and poetry performance. Each session results in several short pieces of theatre. The groups work together to select which pieces will be part of their culminating project, find or create costumes and props, and rehearse what will become a theatrical collage focused on a chosen theme. The culminating event is the twice-annual “We The People” theatre festival.

The PTP Academy will be the next stage in the evolution of the Public Programs, and is slated for a fall 2019 launch date.
