People’s Theatre Project is hiring a Program Director!

People's Theatre Project, a creative youth development organization serving the Washington Heights and Inwood area of NYC, is seeking an experienced program director with a background in theatre, education and social justice to join the organization’s founders in deepening local partnerships and driving impact. Bilingual Spanish/English speakers with a connection to uptown are strongly encouraged to apply.

 

People's Theatre Project cultivates ongoing artistic dialogue with young people in NYC’s neighborhoods of color to amplify their voices and grow local action. Through student-centered and culturally relevant arts-based programming, youth participants are immersed in experiential learning projects that deepen their sense of power, strengthen their connection to their communities and support the development of creative, collaborative and compassionate leaders with 21st century skills.

 

People’s Theatre Project is deeply invested in its home neighborhood of Washington Heights and Inwood in northern Manhattan, and strives to be an impactful part of the lives of the young people it serves there. Through long term partnerships with schools and community-based organizations, People’s Theatre Project engages PreK-12 youth in programming that explores social themes that are connected to their lives while teaching skills in both art making and organizing, serving as a welcome entry point for civic action in the social justice movement.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

Program Development

  • Work collaboratively with the Executive and Managing Directors to refine and document People’s Theatre Project’s Pedagogy

  • Assist in the creation and implementation of new initiatives and curricula to further the strategic direction of the organization

  • Design effective models for winter and spring youth theatre festivals in collaboration with the Executive and Managing Directors and support their curation and production

 

Partnerships Management

  • Work with key staff at each site to identify school and student needs

  • Establish shared goals for program outcomes, outputs, recruitment, attendance and retention to address needs

  • Develop partnership plan to achieve program goals in alignment with PTP’s larger goals

  • Kickoff partnership plan with program site and PTP staff

  • Evaluate program outcomes and communicate findings to site leadership

  • Manage partnerships with college apprenticeship program

 

Program Management

  • Handle day to day management of programs in NYC School District 6

  • Provide direct supervision of teaching artists, site coordinators and apprentices

  • Match teaching artists, site coordinators and apprentices with program sites

  • Coordinate program schedules and add to cloud-based system

  • Manage schedule changes, cancellations and substitute teaching artists

  • Anticipate challenges and work creatively and quickly together with site coordinators to resolve issues at program sites

  • Communicate any and all unresolved issues, or incidents in a timely manner to the Executive Director

  • Work with Managing Director to ensure that programs operate within the approved budget

  • Organize logistics for stakeholder site visits

  • Coordinate school participation in and rehearsals for spring festival

 

Program Evaluation

  • Support the development and implementation of a program evaluation system

  • Collect participant surveys, success stories, and creative outputs from teaching artists at all sites

  • Submit mid and year end program reports to Executive Director with evaluation findings and recommend changes to enhance the program

 

Teaching Artist Recruitment, Training and Evaluation

  • Recruit, interview and select well-qualified teaching artists and teaching apprentices as needed

  • Plan and facilitate annual staff retreats

  • Develop and facilitate curriculum-specific monthly professional development trainings

  • Conduct 1-2 formal observations of each teaching artist during the school year

  • Conduct annual performance reviews of each teaching artist

  • Meet regularly with the Executive Director to review program observations, discuss training needs and support programming

  • Actively seek and participate in opportunities to learn best practices in curriculum development, classroom culture and teacher professional development through research, professional development conferences, and other learning opportunities.

  • Identify and contract guest speakers and trainers, and develop activities that will train teaching artists in best practices in theatre, education and justice work.

 

Qualifications

 

Education/ Experience

  • MA degree in a related subject or 2-4 years experience in related professional role

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Experience in Nonprofit Management, Arts Education or the DOE

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with both stakeholders and staff

  • Background in and passion for the performing arts

  • At ease with cloud-based systems (When I Work, Dropbox, Google Apps)

  • Connection to or stake in the Washington Heights community

  • Spanish fluency a plus

Working Conditions

  • The Program Director will work out of the PTP office, located at 5030 Broadway in Inwood, together with the Executive and Managing Directors. Often the Program Director will be at school sites in the neighborhood to supervise teaching artists and meet with school staff.

  • The Program Director is a full time position. The general weekly schedule is M-F from 9:30am-5:30pm. Programming outside of these hours will require occasional weekend and evening flexibility.

 

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary: $50,000-55,000
