school-Based Residencies

Teaching artists from People’s Theatre Project are working with 400 students each week in three Northern Manhattan schools during the 2011-2012 school year. Our 30-week literacy-based Theatre and Poetry curricula are fully integrative into the Common Core Standards and our administrative and artistic staff works hard to support the goals of our partner schools.

People’s Theatre Project believes strongly in having each student assess, articulate and express their understanding of their studies in every class.  We establish experiential, thoughtful and child-centered classroom environments in order to reach this goal. People’s Theatre Project also offers art education professional development workshops to your teachers throughout the year to deepen their practice.

A Professional Teaching artist from People’s Theatre Project comes into your school and pairs up with a classroom teacher for one and a half hours each week. Our current residency offerings explore poetry and Shakespeare.

THE SPARK THEATRE RESIDENCY explores and uses William Shakespeare as a learning tool for the entire year. Students immerse themselves in the rich language, powerful themes and expressive qualities of one of his plays, and share two performances of their work during the year.

THE POP POETRY RESIDENCY takes student writing and performance to a new level, teaching them the concepts and practices of poetry, such as: figurative language, poetic rhythm and comprehension.  The unit celebrates with two “Open Mic” events, where students perform their poems for invited guests in a relaxed and supportive setting.

THE ACTION THEATRE RESIDENCY uses Theatre of the Oppressed, a methodology developed in Brazil by Augusto Boal, to help students explore peaceful and collaborative responses to conflict and injustice that they may face in their lives. Through specific theater games, students are empowered to be leaders in brainstorming solutions to problems. This program culminates in an original Forum Theatre Play presented for the school community.
