The Uptown Action Troupe (Ages 16 and up)
Northern Manhattan is ground zero for the deportation of thousands of immigrants each year. In partnership with Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights, this ensemble of English and Spanish speaking community members works together to create original plays based on the performers’ true stories of immigration injustice that are performed in an interactive forum across New York City.Uptown_Action_Troupe.htmlshapeimage_18_link_0
Professional Works
Each season we support writers in the development of new plays that offer the larger world a unique glimpse into the life of Washington Heights and Inwood. These storytellers are a vital force in celebrating the struggles and triumphs of our neighbors and are essential to the empowerment and growth of our community. The new works inspired by our streets, our sounds and our people are premiered in a festival of new plays each June.

Voices: Our Young People Speak (Ages 13-16)
An after-school program for local teens ages 13 - 16 in partnership with Seven Stories Institute. This theatre/writing program provides a safe and effective place for local teens to become changemakers in their community. Using Howard Zinn’s A Young People’s History of the United States and the participants’ own personal history, Voices culminates in a theatrical protest of music, words and movement and a published anthology of the participants’ writing.Voices.htmlshapeimage_20_link_0
School-Based Residencies
Each week, hundreds of students in Northern Manhattan classrooms bring to life the characters and themes in the plays of William Shakespeare and develop and perform their own original writing while more fully understanding and expressing their own life experiences. An experienced team of teaching artists implement our carefully designed full-year curricula which are fully integrative into the Common Core Standards.School_Based_Residencies.htmlshapeimage_23_link_0
Theatre at Isabella Geriatric Center
The eldest members of our community have a wealth of experience and hard-earned wisdom which too often is discredited. Our teaching artists facilitate Shakespeare and Storytelling residencies twice a week with residents of Isabella House in preparation for what the Daily News called “gallantly performed scenes...as well as their own works, to a packed crowd inside the W. 191st St. senior citizen residence.”
